Statements by Dr Hinshaw
Comments on Today's Numbers
  • Rise in hospitalizations is 3.1% in last 2 weeks (5% is the "trigger threshold")
  • Number of factors accounting for this, including rising community cases and hospital outbreaks
  • 16 ICU beds, 23% of 70 bed allotted capacity (interjection: 50% is trigger, if memory serves)
  • Edmonton Zone is still concerning
  • It has been 2 weeks since voluntary measures have been established and reproductive value has begun to slow "somewhat" (R from 1.35 to 1.17 now). Needs to continue to work and bring R below 1.0
  • Active Alerts/Outbreaks (1+ cases) in ~8% of all schools, 512 cases total
  • 96 schools on outbreak (2+ cases) with 26 on watch list (5+)
  • In-school transmission in 69 schools, 44 with only 1 new case from it
Ease of Covid-19 Spread
  • Significant spread can occur quickly even despite best intentions. Highlights: (1) a wedding where 43/63 people were given Covid-19, (2) a social party where 8/24 (to date with continued work on this event), and (3) a workplace gathering where a common social event with 9/29 contracting Covid-19 (again, to date)
  • It is critical for all social gatherings to remain small and to maintain distance
  • "Covid-19 really does love parties" and it's important to keep it in mind
Testing Procedure Change
  • In mid-September, the cold and flu season resulted in changes to the testing procedure to limit asymptomatic testing
  • Even with this shift, wait time have not decreased enough in order to use lab test information to prevent spread optimally due to the number of cold/flu symptoms
  • With Covid cases and symptomatic cases rising, more changes are needed
  • All asymptomatic testing in people with no known exposure will be paused. Appointments booked will be kept until November 4th
  • All symptomatic individuals or close contacts of an outbreak are still given testing
  • 659,000+ tests given for asymptomatic no known exposure with 0.11% positive, up from ~0.07% reported previously
  • The now excluded tests accounted for 30% of tests conducted. Removal of them should improve turnaround, increasing capacity for getting negative testing students back to school, employees back to work, and contact tracing
  • Thanks pharmacies and community pharmacies will not be booking new tests, but all existing appointments will be honoured until the 4th
  • Reiterates the need to work with contact tracers - there is "no shame in being exposed" and, while it can be frustrating about Covid-19's impacts, case identification is important
  • Reminder that influenza shots are available and that flu shots will help protect your health and insulate the Covid-19 infrastructure
Q&A - Cases in Alberta
  • Common traits of spread events?: All inside with many people indoors "in a social context". Maybe not all procedures were not followed (screening, distance, masking, etc)
  • What is the "state" of Covid-19 in Alberta?: "At a point that is critical". Other jurisdictions have seen a rapid escalation. Alberta isn't there yet, but still "in a danger zone". Next stretch of time will determine which direction Alberta will follow
  • Lethbridge leads in infections/100k and 9 outbreaks. Will it need additional restrictions?: Spread in Lethbridge is relatively well known, unlike Edmonton. Additional voluntary measures in Edmonton for that reason
  • Response to calls for mandatory restrictions?: No one perfect solution, with timing of mandatory restrictions a matter of debate...e.g. - mandatory measures now may impact other sides of health and we currently do not know if we can correct without use of them. Giving Albertans "every opportunity" to chip in voluntarily before mandatory measures are enforced
  • Is this a second wave?: Notes the spread is generally defined by influenza, which will "wash over" and pass if we hold on. Covid-19's persistence means that people have to work together to restrict its spread
  • Wedding celebration in Calgary?: Defers to local colleagues who may have more details
Q&A - Other
  • Why is there a delay with Federal tracing app?: Technical challenges in transitioning ABTraceTogether users to federal app (which has been updated to allow it to work in the background of iPhones). Discussions underway
  • Message to non-compliant Albertans?: To non-compliant Albertans, think about those in your lives who are older. What would you want others to do to protect them?
  • Changes to Halloween guidance?: Doesn't directly answer, but notes indoor social gatherings are a risk and not recommended and encourages trick-or-treating in small groups
  • New models?: Not working on predictive modelling like in the spring, but has been working with models for decision making purposes
  • Testing capacity?: There appears to be confusion. Surge capacity target was always intended to be 20,000 and was planned by pulling from other departments. Increases in efficiency and throughput is still underway (average daily testing capacity is 15-16,000, highest per capita in country)
  • Response to federal request to have "quarantine sites"?: Not personally involved in conversations. Provincial effort has been made to limit household transmission and for use for incoming travel

2020.10.14 01:43 Forsthis Don't know what to do without proper Identification and/or supporting documents

I've been trying to get my life back on track after years of neglect, I'm recently working again newly moved to Toronto but I don't know how to get around the roadblock of not having photo ID.
Housing is available for cheaper closer to my work (in which case I also save on transit), but I need a credit card which although I'm eligible for I cannot claim without proper identification (I also want it to rebuild my credit).
The only documents I possess is a long expired Alberta Driver's License, an Alberta Health Card (no photo), and a SIN card. I have an old photocopy of my birth certificate but not an official copy of it, otherwise I haven't seen a doctor or dentist or lawyer or any such in 10+ years and don't have any guarantors.
Applying for an Ontario Photo Card or Health card I don't meet the documents requirement according to the site. But trying to obtain supporting documents like my birth certificate requires identification which I don't have and can't get without said documents.
Appointments are very limited (I'm not even sure where to go and if they're accepting them) and calls have been long hours plus wait times that get dropped or lead to dead ends.
I'm looking for any advice on how to move things along to get over this hump which seems to be blocking me from getting anywhere.
I do have a bank account with a debit mastercard. I lived in Montreal for several years prior but I never had my identification kept up to date. I'm wondering how longterm homeless people get identification.

Statements by Minister Shandro:
  • Testing is crucial for Covid-19 control
  • Over 1,000,000 Albertans have been tested - a remarkable accomplishment
  • At start, a few hundred tests could be tested
  • Wants to acknowledge AHS and Alberta Precision Labs
  • Thanks Albertans who have gotten tested
  • Government will act to reduce wait times and speed up test results, expand testing, and prepare for winter
  • Wants Alberta to remain a leader
  • Plans for more hiring of more hospital staff?: AHS, in January, built up workforce
  • Federal tracing app?: Spoke to Minister Hajdu. Still a couple issues, but happy to continue working with Minister
  • Expanding testing in counties?: Defers to Mauro Chies, who spoke about enhancing testing locations. Some rapid testing in regional centres, though lower throughput
  • What evidence supports the EMS dispatch changes? Will you provide the proof?: EMS, including dispatch is integrated into AHS over a decade ago. AHS made decision to integrate the last 4 municipalities into AHS for 2 reasons: (1) AHS is borderless, and (2) integrate oversight. Met with mayors of the municipalities last week and agreed to look over information he was provided before AHS proceeded. Will be against changes if the evidence shows response times would be adversely affected, but not what AHS evidence is showing him
Statements by Mauro Chies, Board Chair of APL
  • Thanks all front line workers
  • The accomplishment has been made through overtime and flexibility that
  • There is still lots to do going forward
  • Drive through testing in winter?: Looking at alternate facilities. Tents worked well in summer (though a bit hot), but need more protection from the elements in the cold
Statements by Dr Hinshaw:
Working from Home
  • Dr Hinshaw has provided the update from home after developing a sore throat on Friday and was tested (negative Covid result). Despite this, doesn't want to pass one whatever it is and will work from home until symptoms resolve
  • Acknowledges that the job can be done remotely and staying home isn't easy, with many facing financial choices
  • Encourages people to stay home and to not expose others when sick
  • 20 schools with alerts (1 cases) have had no transmission, with class back
  • Active alerts/outbreaks (1+ cases) in 113 schools (~5%) with 210 active cases
  • 47 schools have outbreaks (2+), 6 on "watch" (5+)
  • 9 schools with likely in-school transmission
Foothills Medical Centre
  • Rise in hospitalizations due in part somewhat due to Foothills outbreak
  • 1 death this weekend
  • Outbreak is a significant concern and great deal of work is ongoing
  • 2 additional units have outbreak protocol - one is a transition unit (case linked to outbreak has been identified), one is a short stay (unclear source and outbreak protocol is precaution)
  • 53 cases, 26 patients, 4 deaths
  • Likely that more cases will be identified
  • Critical step is to minimize new spread
  • Visitation limited to end of life or preapproved essential visitors
  • 39 surgeries have been postponed planned for today. Surgeries are being rescheduled, most booked for the next 7 days
Millwoods Shepherd's Care
  • 19 cases linked to outbreak with 2 deaths this weekend
  • AHS working closely with operator. They are on site and meeting virtually
  • Testing offered to all residents and staff
Herd Immunity
  • Many questions about the topic
  • % required to develop herd immunity depends on infection type
  • Estimates for Covid-19 are 50-70% (Canada's serology suggests 1% of population with infection)
  • The suggestion of letting spread occur among younger individuals does not take into account drawbacks
  • The rapid spread means it will likely still spread into vulnerable populations despite best efforts
  • An approach on herd immunity would hurt the elderly and those with chronic conditions
  • Death from Covid-19 is also not the only severe outcome: to date, 1/67 between 20-39 with Covid-19 needed hospital care, 1/18 for 50-69, and 1/4 for 70+
  • These numbers can be a strain for the health system. "We have seen this overload happen in other countries. We do not want it to happen here"
  • We don't know if long lasting immunity is possible, potentially making all lives lost meaningless
  • Reliance on development of safe and effective treatments and vaccines is important
  • The balance of all our health needs until then is important
  • The lower number of positives on Friday was due to "previously clinically reported cases"
  • Expectations for flu season?: Depends on Albertans. Some places like Australia had high flu immunization. That plus Covid restrictions limited influenza spread. That is one potential future for Alberta if we go down the same path
  • Level of concern at Foothills?: As with all acute care outbreaks, this is concerning. The regular testing and aggressive tracing is important and there is a capable outbreak team (partly leading to the large numbers we're seeing). Suggests that Misericordia outbreak has greater unknown spread while Foothills has well understood spread
  • Lower mortality despite rising cases since July. Is this due to treatment?: It has been observed in a few places. Age specific breakdown may not reflect...possibly just deaths are related to who is being infected. While treatments are improving, we may see increased death because of outbreaks like the ones we're seeing
  • Halloween?: Working on a guidance document. Looking for a fun, safe Halloween
  • Thoughts on NHL "experiment"?: Shows the importance of planning early, cooperation with public health officials, and constant communication. Highlights usefulness of the private testing for NHL as to not affect the public's health
Additional information will be logged below:
  • Calgary Upper NE's active cases: 119 (+13)
  • The 4th death over the weekend was in Sherwood Park

Statements by Dr Hinshaw
Opioid Report
  • Many Albertans who use opioids face challenges and the pandemic has had dire impacts on their lives
  • In the first 6 months of 2020, 449 died from apparent unintentional opioid poisoning (301 between April and June)
  • Deaths rose during first few months of pandemic. Challenges were faced in accessing supports/service while increasing stress/anxiety/isolation occurred
  • 3,000+ emergency/urgent care visits related to opioid use between April and June
  • Other jurisdictions have seen similar trends
  • Covid protocol has been adjusted to ensure individuals who use drugs can access critical services (harm reduction to treatment to recovery)
  • Will continue to work to reduce the impact of Covid prevention measures on accessing services
  • Stresses that help is available and, if you use drugs, don't use them alone
  • "Ripple effects" of Covid is large and we need to balance Covid-19 and the impacts of the restrictions
  • 13 schools with alerts have had no transmission since
  • Active alerts/outbreaks (1+ cases) in 97 schools with 163 active cases in total (4% of schools)
  • 32 school outbreaks (2+ cases), 7 with likely transmission, 4 with 5+ cases
  • In school aged cases, weekly # of 5-19 year olds are most strongly trending with overall cases, with peak cases in age group matching peak cases in Alberta
  • Since school started, there has been a week-over-week decrease in cases for this age group despite increases in testing for this group
  • This isn't to minimize school safety, but to highlight importance of community transmission
  • Death today was in Foothills
  • Foothills outbreak is concerning and AHS is moving quickly
  • 29 cases (17 patients), 3 deaths in total to date
  • AHS is testing and isolating with "significant precautions"
  • Multiple staff swabbing sites have been installed to increase staff testing on outbreak units. Staff on units are screened twice daily
  • Natural to ask if hospitals are at risk. AHS has moved quickly to protect
  • Stresses that policy is only part of the equation: we all must do our part
  • If you are sick, do not visit/enter a care facility and follow the public health measures "to the letter" while there
  • Recognizes the inconvenience and financial difficulty. Continues to advocate that employers support their employees whenever possible so they can stay home when sick...also recognizes that this can be difficult on employers
  • While we want to meet during Thanksgiving, we want to keep it safe
  • Keep it to a maximum 15 people outside your household
  • Have one person plate everyone's meals (or even pre-portion the meal)
Q&A - Second Wave
  • Do you agree with Trudeau's statement that we are in the second wave?: A "wave" implies we have no control over the transmission. Some provinces have determined what they call a wave. Doesn't think that's where Alberta growth is growing but have been relatively stable. Waves are one possible future, as are "small ripples". Albertan's actions are going to decide which we see
  • Are targeted lockdowns being planned in the event of second wave?: It is an option (refers to "enhanced" category online)
Q&A - Covid Cases
  • Should we expect testing numbers to change with no more asymptomatic testing?: It hasn't impacted volume of testing to date. Seems too early to say
  • Why no new model?: Models do not predict future and, while a new model is in development, the overall question of "what we will see" in the fall is already publicly known
  • Is the outbreak in Hope Mission Shelter going to require an increase in distance between mats?: Yes, as per guidelines. Hasn't asked local colleague to ensure has occurred yet
  • Source for Foothills outbreak?: No further information
Q&A - Other
  • Officials in US/Canada are increasingly being personally targeted. Why is this happening? Are you?: Pandemic has caused suffering and health professionals become easy outlet for suffering. While receiving a lot of correspondence from Albertans (including personal and professional criticisms), hasn't received "hate mail or threats"
  • Do you think the harassment is tied to being a woman?: Difficult question to answer as she can only go with her own experience. May be interesting to discuss with male counterparts. Regardless, questions and criticism should be presented respectfully
  • You previously recommended supervised consumption sites for opioids. Are you still pressing for it?: Important to separate different bodies of work. Thinks that "broad spectrum of services" is important. Allocation of resources are policy decisions (defers to Ministers after this)
Additional information will be logged below:
  • Edmonton Northeast's active cases: 93 (-14)
  • Calgary Upper NE's active cases: 104 (+1)

Statements by Dr Hinshaw:
School Cases
  • 5 schools have had alerts ended
  • 81 schools with 1+ cases (total of 126 cases)
  • 6 new school outbreaks (19 total), defined as 2+ cases in last 14 days
  • 2 schools with likely in-school transmission: Vimy Ridge in Edmonton and Springfield Elementary School in Peace River
  • Again, not unexpected
  • 2 schools on "Watch" status (5+ cases). Vimy Ridge has 6 cases currently
  • 3% of all schools have had cases to date. Transmission has been identified in ~3% of school with cases
  • Sees this as a positive start
Foothills Medical Centre
  • Covid death over weekend occurred at Foothills
  • All acute care outbreaks are taken very seriously
  • 14 patients, 4 staff members in 3 units have tested positive
  • Public health investigation underway and AHS has taken swift action
  • Widespread testing is underway and more cases are likely to be detected
  • Patients with symptoms or are positive are treated in designated rooms
  • Foothills is safe and there is no increased risk for patients
St Joseph's College
  • Men's residence site on the University of Alberta has an outbreak
  • 5 cases
  • Common question is "what are cohorts"?: Small group where physical distancing can be relaxed
  • Household (+15 others), with the cohort definition being consistent for the entire household
  • Coworkers or other people in religious gatherings are NOT cohorts
  • How many sports cohorts can a child be in?: Many factors, including sport, and must be personally decided
  • There is no plan to raise sport cohort size in the immediate future (currently 50)
Q&A - Foothills
  • How worrying is Foothills outbreak?: Acute care outbreaks are always a concern. Seems to have occurred with in-hospital transmission between patients. Factors surrounding the introduction of Covid into the hospital is being investigated. Lessons of Misericordia are being applied
  • Are patients/visitors/staff not masking?: Investigation underway, so no conclusion yet. Inconsistent masking use reported with visitors and being investigated. Report of staff member who worked while symptomatic. We need to better understand why these both occurred as to prevent it from happening again
  • Is it concerning one outbreak is in cardiac unit?: Absolutely a concern - heart disease is a risk factor. Patients will be tested regularly (even if asymptomatic) and situation will be monitored closely
Q&A - Schooling
  • Comments on slow test results for students?: Wants mild symptomatic students to get tested quickly so they can get back to school quickly if negative (currently a work in progress with a lot of work going into it). Close contacts, independent of test result, must stay home because negative tests may develop into positive cases
  • Edmonton Public School has 48 staff, 545 students sent home. Comment?: Knows this has significant impact, is incredibly inconvenient, and understands the frustration. Does not want to downplay this, but vast majority of cases acquired disease in community. Cases in school aged individuals tracks with cases in community (Interjection - I think this is to mean that schools aren't increasing transmission). Asks for patience for the next few weeks as techniques in isolating are refined
  • Were there projections for school cases?: Emphasizes that projections are just a ballpark.
  • How many cases are too many for in-person learning?: Repeats that school aged cases are tracking with community spread, with the important number being number of in-school transmission cases. Education is best given in-person and has a significant benefit to the student's overall health (including social development, learning, educational development)
  • BC reduced screening for schooling. Will Alberta?: Discussion has been made. Alberta isn't far enough along to determine if symptoms can be removed without increasing Covid outbreak risk. Will watch other regions to see their experience
Q&A - Other
  • Who polices gathering sizes in small communities?: Organizers of the event, participants. Assistance and reminders can be provided by law enforcement, public health services, and a complaints website is available through Environmental Public Health. Difficult to do in real time, so if you see an event, try to give AHS a heads up early
  • Plans to change gathering size?: Not planned. Currently watching patterns of transmissions and will discuss restrictions if needed
  • Update to spread of cases in Edmonton?: 1/2 of active cases in Edmonton are close contacts of a confirmed case. Seeing if this spread in particular can be reduced. 1/3 are unknown source and checking of trends are occurring with these cases. Many cases are related to social events, but seeing workplace spread as well
Additional information will be logged below:
  • Calgary Upper NE's active cases: 100 (rose to 100 over weekend)
  • Edmonton Northeast's active cases: 101 (+7 since Friday)

Statements by Dr Hinshaw
New outbreaks
  • Calgary Kidanemehret Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church: 57 confirmed cases. Public health team tracing contacts. Asking anyone who has been in attendance in last 2 weeks to get tested. Children who attended in last 2 weeks should not go to school this week. Concerned there could be more case based on case numbers to date.
  • Later asked for more details on church outbreak: outbreak was just reported, so little is known. Possibly a lapse in following guidelines, but also reviewing to see if guidelines need to be updated to allow for safe gatherings
  • An Edmonton Walmart Supercentre has reported 8 cases in staff. Unclear if staff were exposed at work or common exposure outside workplace
  • Calgary's Lillydale Chicken Plant has 24 cases, 3 recovered
  • Cargill Case Ready has 1 active case, 6 recovered
  • Harmony Meat Plant has 66 active, 3 recovered cases
  • Management in all these outbreaks are working closely with health officials
Total case numbers
  • Case numbers over last 3 days raise concerns
  • Looking closely at new numbers to determine if additional step are necessary
Back to School - Order 33
  • Apologizes for anxiety and confusion the order has sparked; wanted to provide transparency, not to hide information
  • Wanted to ensure school authorities were given the order, "which codifies the guidance that has been online for weeks before the order came into effect today"
  • Understands the concerns. To improve, going forward, commits to a goal of only posting new orders Monday through Thursday and will present it online via social media
  • States that no policy has changed since August 4th, which made mask use for Grade 4-12 is mandatory with exception of seated classroom instruction where 2 m distancing cannot be maintained
  • Details on classroom policy: physical distancing of 2 m is "a useful public health measure" and greater distancing is still important. As such, masking isn't required when classrooms have greatest physical distance possible (when 2 m isn't possible, 2 m if it is) and, if 2 m isn't possible, students are arranged so they don't face each other (e.g. - semicircle) to prevent cough/sneezing directly into another student's face
  • The policy allows students a break from mask use during seated activity
  • Suggests use of non-medical masks during non-seated classroom activity
Order 33 Q&A
  • Why not leave physical distancing in place for a couple weeks?: Guidance has been in place for weeks. Order 33 clarifies the requirements. Requirement for masking has been eased since early August.
  • Why did it clarity come out after registration deadline?: originally meant to come out earlier, but delayed by issues in processes and legal tools in the order. It "would have been ideal" if posted sooner
  • Why is 2 metre limit not enforced in classroom?: notes some students may experience difficulty with learning and communication with masking in classroom. Decision made based on other measures in place (e.g. - surface cleaning, symptom screening)
Back to School - Cohorts
  • In-school cohorts should be small and just limited to the one class
  • Teachers are only in the cohort if they can't keep distance from student
  • Teachers and staff need to be attentive when they aren't in class/not relax once they are away from students
Back to School - School Staff/Teachers

2020.08.31 15:59 postvasectomy Todd Muir: Unfortunately, however, he has had numerous surgical procedures, all hoping to make him better, and ultimately making him worse.

Notes from postvasectomy:
Todd asks the doctor about vasectomy complications beforehand. Doctor gives the typical "vasectomy is safe, sometimes complications happen, including epdidiymitis which usually goes away on its own but very occasionally becomes chronic" type warning. Todd asks what about erectile dysfunction, doctor says any problems with erections would be "in your head." No big deal, really. Men hardly ever even call me after their vasectomy. This is such a chill procedure that even if you do call me, I might not even bother returning your call.
Todd goes in for the vasectomy Nov 2005. Some trouble during the vasectomy where he has retracted testicles that maybe caused the procedure to be more difficult and painful than it should have been. Four days later he goes to help coach youth skiing and tries to take it easy. He feels some minor pain when he is turning. A few days later he helps move a Christmas tree.
Things don't go well in December, and he talks with the doctor to tell him about his various pains, including leg pain. Doctor suggests Neurontin to help with the pain. January, Todd goes to his GP who schedules him for a visit with a urologist. February he goes to the Emergency Room twice complaining of pain. March, he visits the urologist who says the vasectomy looks good and maybe pelvic floor dysfunction. He has been unable to have sex with his wife since the vasectomy. He gets (spermatic cord?) injections and starts asking about a reversal. First doctor discourages getting a reversal. He goes to Dr. Burrows for a reversal, feels ok for a few weeks, then seems to get worse and worse.
He tries botox, lidocaine infusions, ketamine. At some point he has at least one testicle removed, which also doesn't help. He can't hold a job because he is in too much pain and can't sit in a chair. He tries to kill himself.
More than 10 years after the vasectomy, he tries to sue the urologist who did his vasectomy, arguing that:
The doctor argues that:
The judge sides with the Doctor.
I'm reminded of the American Urological Association statement:
Chronic scrotal pain associated with negative impact on quality of life occurs after vasectomy in about 1-2% of men. Few of these men require additional surgery.
That last sentence there "few require additional surgery" is presented as if to say that the pain that 1-2% of the men experience is not really very bad. Not bad enough to "require" surgery. I suppose this would be a correct way of looking at things if there were a simple, inexpensive, low-risk and effective surgical treatment available. But as Todd's story shows, more surgery comes with the risk of even worse quality of life. Sometimes, your best option might be to accept that your vasectomy has left you visiting the emergency room periodically, unable to have sex and unable to have a pain-free day. Few indeed are so desperate that they "require" additional surgery that may make their already terrible situation even worse.
Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta
Muir v Macdonald
July 12, 2017
This is an action by the Plaintiffs as against the Defendants for medical negligence as a result of complications that arose after the Defendant, Dr. Macdonald, performed a vasectomy on the Plaintiff, Mr. Muir. The surgery took place on November 30, 2005, at the Defendant’s clinic in Banff, Alberta.
In 2005, Todd and Kathleen Muir had been married for approximately 17 years. They had two sons. After some difficulties arose with their then method of birth control, they made the conscious decision not to have any more children, and decided to investigate the best method to ensure that happened. After much discussion, they decided to investigate whether a vasectomy was a suitable option for Mr. Muir.
The procedure was performed on November 30, 2005 and after the procedure, Mr. Muir had a number of difficulties and eventually developed chronic pain which has had a significant impact on his lifestyle and career.
Mr. Muir was an active youth and was involved in skiing, hockey, baseball, motorcycle and snowmobile riding. He had no significant injuries at the time of the surgery.
Mr. Muir sought treatment for the chronic pain that he said he suffered after the vasectomy. He met with, or consulted with, or was treated by numerous treatment providers.
The Defendant’s position is that a later surgical intervention caused the Plaintiff’s injuries, not anything related to the vasectomy.
The Plaintiffs submit that Dr. Macdonald breached the standard of care in the procedure itself and also by his actions both pre and post-surgically. According to the Plaintiffs, a patient who presents with retracted testicles should not undergo a no-scalpel vasectomy in that condition. The patient should be given a Valium, soak in a hot tub or have a hot towel to relax the testicles to see whether they were in a condition where a safe procedure can be performed. Furthermore, the epididymis is an extremely sensitive part of the male anatomy and prolonged contact with this area increases the risk of complications with the vasectomy. In this case, Mr. Muir presented with retracted testicles, which put him at a higher risk.
The Plaintiffs submit that Dr. Macdonald did not perform a physical examination of Mr. Muir’s genitals before beginning the procedure. The Plaintiffs also allege that Dr. Macdonald did not freeze Mr. Muir’s genitals appropriately.
According to the Plaintiffs, Dr. Macdonald should have stopped the procedure on the right side when he encountered difficulty trying to find the left-side vas deferens. At no point did Dr. Macdonald stop the procedure to advise Mr. Muir that it was taking longer than usual to complete the procedure. When Dr. Macdonald pierced his left-side vas deferens Mr. Muir felt extreme pain.
The Defendants submit that Dr. Macdonald did not breach the standard of care. He performed the no-scalpel vasectomy on Mr. Muir in accordance with his standard practice for no-scalpel vasectomies. The Defendants submit that the vasectomy proceeded without complication.
According to Mr. Muir, Dr. Macdonald encountered difficulties on the left side. Dr. Macdonald made the comment “I can’t find your left. I can’t find your vas”. Mr. Muir recalled that he grabbed the doctor’s arm and said you have to stop. During direct examination, Mr. Muir testified as follows:
Q. All right. Did he complete the procedure?
A. It took a while and then he did make the comment, "I found it". And then the next thing I knew he’d cut it.
Q. And when he cut it, what did you do?
A. By this time, and I don’t know, the freezing hadn’t taken great or it had worn off, whatever you say, but on this side I literally felt myself arch my back and buck up on the table and I could feel huge pain when he cut the left.
Mr. Muir testified that when he left the Clinic he was sore down in the “lower end”. He was not walking normally. He managed to get into his car and drive home. He stopped at one point to get out of the car and stretch. This was not because of his condition but because he wanted a break.
The after-care for the no-scalpel vasectomy was described on the pamphlet. Mr. Muir recalled there were some directions about heavy lifting and icing areas that were sore. He followed the procedure exactly. He had bruising and swelling. He was unsure when the bruising faded away although with time he started to improve. Mr. Muir recalled that he read somewhere that he could not have unprotected sex for a while. Once that period of time elapsed, he and his wife resumed sexual intercourse but Mr. Muir experienced a great deal of pain when he ejaculated. They tried a few more times but his pain continued. He began having pain in his left leg. Mr. Muir also started getting pain in his left foot whenever he sat. He found it was uncomfortable to wear tight clothing. Mr. Muir noticed that his left testicle had dropped lower.
Mr. Muir recalled helping with the family Christmas tree following the surgery. Because of his ongoing pain, he did not lift the tree but helped to steady it. He was not bent over but he bent his knee slightly and then he felt pain in his left scrotum.
In early December 2005, the ski season was just beginning. As he was head coach he was required to be present on the Lake Louise Ski Hill to help organize the students. He attended the ski hill [4 days after his vasectomy.] According to Mr. Muir, he would only take easy runs and check on groups. He felt some pain when he turned. He had no falls at this time. The sessions ran from 9:30 a.m. till noon and then again in the afternoon. He was involved in no other activities but he continued to ski for the duration of the 2005 and 2006 ski season.
Throughout the recovery process, he returned to walking normally. He still had pain shooting through to his left foot and after ejaculating.
Around the middle of December he called Dr. Macdonald. The first call was short as he was unable to speak directly with Dr. Macdonald. He then called again but still was not able to reach him. Following the phone messages, Mr. Muir sent an email to the Clinic. Shortly after he sent the email he received a call from Dr. Macdonald.
Mr. Muir explained to Dr. Macdonald that he was still experiencing pain. At one point, Dr. Macdonald commented that he sounded depressed and that he should come and see him and he would prescribe an anti-depressant called Elavil.
Dr. Macdonald confirmed that he would have advised Mr. Muir to take Elavil. He explained that it is a good second line drug because in low doses it is good for treating chronic pain and it is good for insomnia. In high doses it is used to treat depression.
Dr. Popowich did not believe that the shooting pain down the leg during ejaculation could be related to the no-scalpel vasectomy. The nerve that supplies the leg is nowhere near the operative site. This Court finds that Dr. Macdonald met the standard of care in all respects with the exception of failing to return Mr. Muir’s phone calls in a timely manner.
At this point in time, Dr. Macdonald’s involvement in the case ended. Following the surgery, Mr. Muir embarked on a long journey of procedures and visits with many medical practitioners.
January, 2006
Mr. Muir first went to see his general practitioner, Dr. McLaughlin. He could not recall if there was a physical examination. Following his appointment with Dr. McLaughlin he made an appointment with urologist Dr. Baverstock for March 2006.
Jan - Feb 2006
He attended at the emergency centre on at least two occasions in January and February 2006 as he continued to experience pain.
March, 2006
Mr. Muir saw Dr. Baverstock on March 6, 2006. When Mr. Muir explained his symptoms to Dr. Baverstock, he investigated possible cancer or prostrate problems. He prescribed Flomox and sent Mr. Muir for a cystoscopy to look at his bladder. The lab tests and scrotal ultrasound were normal. The physical examination was normal. Dr. Baverstock suspected pelvic floor dysfunction or spasm and recommended conservative treatment in the form of medication and physiotherapy. Based on his physical examination of Mr. Muir he thought he had had a good vasectomy.
Mr. Muir also saw Dr. Balharry, a general practitioner in Canmore. He saw Dr. Balharry on a number of occasions. He tried a number of injection treatments. On a couple of occasions the injections helped with the pain but the relief was not permanent.
May, 2006
Mr. Muir also saw Dr. Shields and Dr. Amundson, both urologists in Lethbridge. He saw Dr. Shields about obtaining a vasectomy reversal. Dr. Shields did not think this would be a good idea and specifically advised against it. Dr. Shields refunded his money as he did not want to do the reversal. Dr. Shields referred Mr. Muir to a pain specialist.
Dr. Shield’s examination of Mr. Muir’s epididymis, testicles and scrotum was normal. Dr. Shields could not determine the cause of Mr. Muir’s pain. Dr. Shields advised against a reversal. In his opinion it would likely aggravate rather than help alleviate the pain.
Mr. Muir also received a number of injections from Dr. Amundson.
Mr. Muir saw Dr. Abele, a urologist. Dr. Abele was not able to offer him a meaningful solution. He saw Dr. Hulyk, the father-in-law of one of his sisters. Dr. Hulyk made referrals and provided information.
Aug 2006
Mr. Muir found an American physician, Dr. Burrows, a urologist who specialized in vasectomy complications, in Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Burrows performed a vasectomy reversal in August 2006. Following the reversal, according to Mr. Muir, his symptoms improved for about three weeks. After three weeks he phoned Dr. Burrow’s office and advised he was experiencing a burning on the left side. He returned to Dr. Burrow’s office where Dr. Burrows checked the left side vas where they did the connection. His condition improved again. However, the pain and symptoms were not completely eliminated and the pain returned again.
Mr. Muir saw Dr. Burrows for a third time and there was further improvement. He still had a burning sensation in his feet and some pain in the left-hand side.
Mr. Muir continued to see doctors, including: Dr. Clark, a pain specialist; Dr. Aung; Dr. Levine, a urologist in Chicago, who specialized on post-vasectomy pain; Dr. Carslon; and Dr. Wilson, a neurologist. Dr. Wilson treated him with Botox. Although it provided temporary relief, it did not permanently relieve the pain. Dr. Robert and Dr. Binegar were two other doctors he saw. Dr. Binegar worked at the Mayo clinic in the United States. Dr. Brown worked in Montreal, a general surgeon who worked on groin injuries.
Dec 2010
Mr. Muir’s current physician is Dr. Ali. He has been treating Mr. Muir since December 2010. Dr. Ali recommended a number of treatments including ketamine infusions and lidocaine injections. Mr. Muir located these physicians and asked Dr. Ali to assist him in filling out the appropriate financial forms. Mr. Muir found some relief with ketamine infusions. Dr. Ali recalled that there was some improvement but Mr. Muir was having difficulty obtaining funding. There was also a clinical issue with respect to Mr. Muir’s blood pressure. Dr. Ali also noted that he “plateaud” with the ketamine infusion.
Dr. Ali also advised Mr. Muir that periphery nerve blocks would not improve his symptoms on a permanent basis. Mr. Muir wanted to proceed in any event.
The Plaintiffs submit that causation is established. Prior to the surgery, Mr. Muir was experiencing no pain. After the surgery, Mr. Muir left the Clinic with disabling pain. The only reasonable inference to be drawn from the facts is that something went wrong in the way the operation was performed.
The Defendant submits that if the chronic pain and decrease in functionality occurred regardless of Dr. Macdonald’s conduct, then the claim must be dismissed. According to the Defendants, the Plaintiff had the usual post-vasectomy pain but the pain became chronic as Mr. Muir exacerbated it by electing to go skiing and handling a heavy object within four days of the vasectomy. This was followed by numerous medical interventions. Furthermore, there was no objective medical evidence that Mr. Muir had complications or an infection.
Dr. Gordon did not examine Mr. Muir. Based on his review of the medical records, he opined that Mr. Muir probably has neuropathic pain that has been exacerbated by his various procedures, including the denervation and ilioinguinal procedures. Dr. Gordon noted that Mr. Muir has had various traumas to his nervous system. This led to sensitization and spread of pain outside the area of the nerves that were done.
According to Dr. Gordon, there is no clear evidence that Mr. Muir’s nerve was damaged. The initial spread down the left leg is supportive but not firm evidence. Dr. Gordon summarized the following in his expert report dated February 9, 2014:
Mr. Muir had so many other procedures that led to complicated neuropathic pain. These later surgical procedures have turned Mr. Muir’s pain into a nightmare of [neuropathic] pain, each one making him worse. Even the orchiectomy did not solve the problem. I cannot help but think that if he had stopped at the initial surgical procedure and tried a pain management program, in a comprehensive way that he would stick to, he may not have gone down this path. Unfortunately, however, he has had numerous surgical procedures, all hoping to make him better, and ultimately making him worse.
In Dr. Gordon’s opinion the initial pain experience by Mr. Muir in 2005 after the vasectomy was inflammatory. The procedure itself produced the inflammation leading to the release of inflammatory compounds. It is possible that the skiing on day four and the lifting of the Christmas tree a few days later could have stretched or damaged the nerve leading to further inflammation and pain or even nerve damage. The surgical site was traumatized by these activities.
For nine months following the vasectomy, Mr. Muir coached skiing, worked full-time, commuted to work in Lethbridge and exercised. This Court does not dispute that Mr. Muir experienced pain but he was able to carry on with daily living until he had the vasectomy reversal. He had a dramatic decline in functionality after August 2006. This Court has reviewed Mr. Muir’s evidence at trial that the vasectomy reversal and the removal of his left testicle by Dr. Burrows improved his condition in the long-term although not all of the pain and symptoms were eliminated. However, this evidence does not accord with such a decrease in functionality after the further medical interventions. It also does not accord with Mr. Muir’s continued pursuit of medical treatments. Therefore, I do not accept his evidence on this point. Although he may have experienced short term relief, ultimately, his situation worsened following the reversal and the further medical interventions. The Plaintiffs submit that the discussion of the risks of the procedure was inadequate. According to Dr. Pollock, Dr. Macdonald failed to obtain Mr. Muir’s consent for the procedure. The website (including the updated website) does not list post-vasectomy pain syndrome as a risk.
The Defendant’s position is that Dr. Macdonald’s consent discussion with Mr. Muir had to be consistent with the practice of a physician performing no-scalpel vasectomies in Alberta in 2005. The very small risk of chronic severe pain was disclosed to Mr. Muir prior to the no scalpel vasectomy in accordance with the standard of care required in 2005.
The Defendants submit that a reasonable person in Mr. Muir’s position would undergo the no-scalpel vasectomy if properly informed of the risk of chronic pain. Mr. Muir gave no evidence at trial that disclosure of this very small risk of severe chronic pain following a no-scalpel vasectomy would have caused him to decline the procedure.
Website Information and Consent Form states:
What complications can occur?
Epididymitis – a tender inflammation around the testis may occur after 4-5 days. This occasionally can result in a chronic ache and very seldom becomes severe.
Treatment- Anti-inflammatory drugs, usually subsides within a few days
Mr. Muir made a call and spoke with Dr. Macdonald. His questions to Dr. Macdonald revolved around the risks. He was concerned as to whether there was a risk it would affect his sexual performance. He asked some questions about physiology. He had four areas of questions. He asked whether the procedure could affect erections. Dr. Macdonald replied only if it is “in your head.” Dr. Macdonald appeared to be in a hurry. The phone call lasted approximately ten minutes. During the phone call, Mr. Muir was referred to the clinic’s website.
Dr. Macdonald testified that he always discusses the following risks with the patient:
I always discuss with patients the risk of any surgery. There’s a small risk of bleeding, infection. And with no-scalpel vasectomy, I always talk about the condition called Epididymitis which means inflammation of the epididymis.
Q Why do you always talk about that?
A Because it’s the most complication of vasectomy.
Q And what is that complication? Just describe it for the court.
A The complication is inflammation -- the pathology is inflammation in the epididymis. Usually this self-limiting and settles down but it is the commonest. It can occur in up to 6 percent of patients. Very occasionally it can become chronic.
The Plaintiffs submit that after the procedure Mr. Muir was no longer able to run, bend over or sit properly. He experienced constant pain which affected his ability to participate in sports, use of the toilet and sexual arousal. This interfered with his ability to participate in sporting activities with his sons and family activities such as hiking and family holidays. It has deeply affected his mental state to the point where he has attempted to take his own life.
The Defendants submit that Mr. Muir had the usual recovery pain expected from a noscalpel vasectomy. It is the events that transpired after November 30, 2006 which caused Mr. Muir’s pain to persist and become chronic, including handling the Christmas tree four days postsurgery and skiing at Lake Louise. Any general damages should take into account that Mr. Muir was able to work full-time, travel regularly between Cochrane and Lethbridge and ski the 2005/2006 season.
After the procedure, Mr. Muir skied for the remainder of the season. In 2006, when he started working for the City of Lethbridge he was able to participate in a slow pitch game and could still run to some extent. He was unable to play hockey. Mr. Muir was unable to ski the following year. He would have to drive out to the hill lying down. At one point in time he had to remain on the main floor of his house with a limited radius with one bathroom and one couch.
After he left the City of Lethbridge, he did some consulting for the Edmonton Ski Area. He then got a job with Pro-Am Motorsports in Calgary in sales. He then worked for Gold’s Gym in sales. He was let go from this job as he was unable to sit whilst speaking with clients. He then worked for the Town of Athabasca as general manager of a sports plex. As he wanted to be closer to home he obtained a job at the Okotoks Field House. This job was too stressful and difficult due to the standing requirements, so he was forced to quit. He then worked in Chestermere for six months at their recreation complex. He then obtained a job in Moose Jaw. He lives next to the sports complex and commutes home to Cochrane every two weeks. He has worked there for approximately one and half years.
Based on the evidence before me, this Court notes that Mr. Muir was fully functioning up until the vasectomy reversal. While, this Court does not dispute that Mr. Muir was still experiencing pain, he was still able to ski, work and drive.
Mr. Muir’s intimate relations with his wife were severely affected. Mr. Muir gave evidence that he was unable to have any sexual relations with his wife following the vasectomy.
After the vasectomy, Mr. Muir continued to work until undergoing vasectomy reversal in August 2006. Mr. Muir was off work for approximately six weeks following the second procedure and after returning to work for a couple of weeks in October was unable to work from OctobeNovember 2006 to 2013. He was then unable to work full-time until 2016. Mr. Muir was in receipt of short term disability benefits prior to his termination from the City of Lethbridge and then he was in receipt of CPP disability benefits from 2007 to 2015.
This Court finds that there is no future loss of income, due to this Court’s conclusion that Mr. Muir’s pain would have resolved within two years following the surgery had he chosen to pursue conservative treatment.
Based on the above findings, the Plaintiffs have failed to establish liability. That being the case, no damages are payable.

2020.08.25 07:36 jameane Fantasy Wardrobe: What would you upgrade from your closet?

Inspired by u/-Valora
This was actually really fun and really enlightening, thanks! If anyone wants to start other games, maybe what items in your closet would you repurchase or repurchase a more "investment" version of?
So here we go - what staple in your closet would you want to repurchase or upgrade. Feel free to grab the fantasy picks as well!
I am going to start with my floral blazer, I happen to have a OOTD photo wearing it. I bought this on a whim at Forever21. It isn't the short of floral or color palette I typically go for. I also do not typically do patterned jackets. But I went for it. And I even got it tailored to shorten the sleeves and add some shape to the torso. It works with a lot of things, I have worn it with jumpsuits, to a job interview, with jeans, over plain dresses. And I love it with leggings because I am one of those cover your butt when wearing leggings people. It is a great addition to a leggings and t-shirt day,.
What's wrong with it? Well it is a totally cheap polyester, it is unlined and it could use some shoulder pads. It is also not very breathable or warm. Which is fine for many fall/spring in the Bay Area, but I wouldn't mind a better fabric so I don't freeze in the evenings, and has nicer drape. I realize it also doesn't have to be floral. A great pattern that has visual interest and a little bit of white space would work well too. I'd love to uplevel and get a suit!
The second thing I would add to my upgrade list? I have. teal wool blend cocoon coat from Old Navy. I like it because it is one of the few non-neutral outerwear items I have. The cocoon shape makes it unusual and adds a bit of polish. What sucks is that it is 3/4 sleeves and that it pills really easily. But hey, what do I expect with a $40 wool coat? So to replace this, I would love something that is in the area between maroon and dark fuchsia. I like the cocoon shape for the drama.
The third thing? This greyscale leopard dress from H&M pictured here. It is a t-shirt dress. I have had it for maybe 6 or 7 years. I love it, it works great dressed up or casual. I tend to like the grey leopard more than traditional leopard. It feels more muted so it is easier to wear all the time. Doesn't wrinkle. It is made of a cheap fabric blend so it pills and isn't soft like a cotton or nice jersey would be. It is a little dates with a half exposed zipper in the back. And now I want it to be a smidge longer so it is easier to bike in.
The 4th thing? I have a knit black jumpsuit, ok a couple actually. A sleeveless Ralph Lauren one that has some detail at the neckline (some texture) and a v-neck one that is 3/4 sleeves. The Ralph Lauren one has decent quality. The ASOS one pills easily. I'd love a replacement, in another color and better fabric.
And I have some great costume jewelry and I'd love to upgrade it.
So let's see, I think I'll add another layer and see if I can find some fantasy alternatives:

2020.08.21 05:03 autotldr Kentucky man faces $750K fine for breaking quarantine rules by detouring to Banff

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 32%. (I'm a bot)
"They located Mr. Pennington up on Sulphur Mountain. As a result of him again allegedly being in violation of the quarantine through his travels, there was some consultation with a quarantine officer in Calgary and the decision was made to charge Mr. Pennington under the federal Quarantine Act," Keibel said.
Keibel said there were nine tickets given out in Alberta by the end of June and the one charge under the Quarantine Act but she wasn't aware of any others.
She said those violating the rules are given strict instructions and Pennington had received a warning after his initial ticket.
Keibel said Pennington was escorted out of the park boundaries and told to continue on his journey.
The Canada Border Services Agency only allows such travellers to enter at one of five crossings: Abbotsford-Huntingdon, Kingsgate, Osoyoos, Coutts and North Portal.
They are barred from driving through national parks, leisure sites and tourism locations and receive a hang tag for their rear-view mirror indicating the date they must depart Canada.

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using. * It will be a gaming / school work computer, I want my kids to learn how to code but also use it for gaming like Minecraft and maybe some MMORPG for my self, let's say W.O.W for an example. >What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes? * 500-600 Canadian and if you can from Canadian sites. There is a little wiggle room though.>When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy. * as soon as possible >What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? Tower and OS I can figure out the other stuff. >Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location? * Canada, Alberta. I'd like to keep the parts to Canada but if cheaper states is fine. >If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated. * N/A >Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? 2020.08.09 23:43 Yeeted_The_Emotions Textbooks and OneCard

Hi! This is going to be my first year at MRU in Open Studies. The site recommends that first year students should be able to get a one card (I'll be living in residence and live out of Alberta currently).
I was just wondering, WHEN would be a good time/date to ordebuy both my OneCard and Textbooks?
Any advice would be appreciated!

2020.08.09 07:51 somethingpersonal Some changes I did for 2020 as an average or below average simple guy

Just to make it short, I'm not a 6 foot suddenly woke AM who will tell you about tinder secrets. What I'm sharing is anecdotal and all I ask is you put it to use or discuss how we could make it better here.

Money and job

I don't have a professional job like a lawyer or a doctor. But I'm comfortable enough to be above the water, I have to cut vices that became mindless to me like drinking, paying for cable, paying for an expensive cell plan (a basic plan works fine for me) and video games. What really changed it for me was having an up to date computer, I asked my brother in law to build me one, it cost me about 1.2 grand but not having to deal with lag is a game-changer. I was able to send hundreds of resumes per day (compared to doing it from a shitty laptop) use it solely for learning and managing stocks, and even playing games (there are a lot of free games to occupy you) but I've also used it for networking. In these times, spreading out in Facebook groups, meetups and any forums is better than nothing. Every day I grow my connections, I plan and I strategize. But know that organization is key, as an example, I have built a strong foundation where I can get information anytime. I have my own categories for learning and connecting/chatting with people about fitness, and the same goes for stocks, merchandise, and even dating. If you have all of these integrated into an organized fashion, the tech will work for you. It's super easy for me to be in a different city and find the best sushi stop or meet up with a virtual friend. A good computer means networking, jobs and money. Less is also better, what I always bring with me when I move to places are: haircutting kit, it took awhile to learn how to cut my hair but now I get to do it on my own time, my computer, 5 set clothing (swimwear, cold wear, warm wear), camera for social media (networking) and of course, the essentials such as the wallet.

When it comes to online dating, apps are 98% of the ballpark. Try websites too as there are more unique females there. It also depends on location. I was living in Alberta, then in NY, and now in SD. The difference between these three are a lot. I find that isolated, none coastal cities to be more unique, especially dating non-AF. It's just that cities like SD, SF, and LA have so many ethnic majorities that you will feel sandwiched. It'll be difficult for you to find an XF partner (with exception to more landlocked cities) but as long as you have photos that show full-body, face, and a group plus a short but concise bio, you'll find some hits.
I'm not saying rely on online dating but investing in at least 200 CA$ of dollars per year isn't that bad. Treat it as the last thing you check, 15 minutes while you're in the toilet scrolling or getting back to messages is better than not having anything going for you. Also, do your other brothers a favor and don't talk smack about their ex or whatever baggage they bring. I've dated a pretty interesting mix of women but as long as she's healthy, clean, has something going for them, you can at least have someone that'll grow with you. Dating and sex are like building skills, practice safe sex, learn how women think and keep growing. Obviously don't stick to online dating, spread your accounts (bumble, hinge, coffeemeetsbagel, even facebook works. There's also niche sites akin for us AM to be in like meetmindful and dine, here's a list).
I didn't get to experience basic level relationships because I grew up as an insecure AM, and I'm not particularly good looking either. If you're in the looks department comparable to Ken Jeong, Bobby Lee, and the like, you can always morph and change your style. Don't listen to some people who might say about 4/10s, as long as you grow and grow with them, you'd get to see what you're capable of. Hell, one of my best friends sees a single mother from time to time, I think it's weird but he got to meet his current gf, so he basically just worked his way up... It's weird, yes, but if you're in any western city, anything can literally be liquid, it's up to you to interpret it. You don't have to be a self-deprecating idiot either, as long as you have something that you love, then that's something you can share. It's your common right to experience masculinity, you have to come and chase it though.. Now dating in real life is another ballpark but it's easier with practice, more on this below.

Have a hobby that gets you fit, I stopped buying into the just lifting thing. Maintaining a lot of food is expensive and sometimes bulking in a different frame is just inefficient. Get you a hobby that can develop translatable skills, I started to learn BJJ and it was the best decision yet. I know when I can fight and know when I can't. Even if the dude is a six-foot muscle head, I now have confidence because of your rolling and sparring experience. Obviously it's the pandemic age and I'm indifferent about it, so instead of complaining like a silly duck, I switched and took up parkour and free climbing. With this, I get to meet people and now even a wide variety of women. All you need is consistency and passion. I live in cities so you'd get to meet people who are just looking for friends as stepping stones, it could be difficult but you just have to keep trying.
Get another hobby that develops a skill that will translate into production. At the moment I like learning about cooking fish, this means I get to eat better and save money because I know how to tend to myself. I also pair it up with stocks while I'm learning, so this duality makes me feel like I'm working towards something. It's also a neat feeling knowing that you at least have some equity growing and you don't have to work for it. I'm not going to get into specifics, like how to interact in a non-desperate way but as long as you're neatly groomed, have an open mind and willing to learn with a group, then you're better off.
So for a quick summary: Have a good computer, online dating is good to add variety but don't spend a good amount of your time on it. Have hobbies that will get you moving, grow your skills and make you money. Yes fitness is good but fitness where you learn how to move your body with an opponent is better. Make technology work for you, use it to network, obtain jobs even manage stocks with.

2020.08.06 08:40 Crum1y Right to Refuse Unsafe Work, clarification please, wondering why the word "obligation" is used so often

For many years, in the oil field anyway, I'm sure everywhere, we are told "it's not just a right to refuse unsafe work, it's an obligation". Sometimes there is further explanation that if you don't refuse unsafe work and someone gets injured, you will be liable or blamed or whatever.
When I try to find out this obligation bit in the actual laws, because I don't believe the intent of the law is to put the onus on front line workers, I actually can't find the word obligation in there. I remember reading something "a worker must refuse unsafe work" once, but I actually can't find it. Further frustrating me, I actually can't find a up to date copy of the OHS code (or act, not sure what the difference is) online. The site is just sending me to a spot where I have to pay for a copy, which I don't think is normal, I assume the site is bugged or something. I'm pretty sure I've been able to read the Act previously. The most recent thing I can find online is a 2017 copy, and section 5 & 31 don't use obligation in the wording. It says a worker must take reasonable care to stay safe.
I know there was changes made to the wording in 2020, but I can't seem to find that either. I don't know how to search for these kinds of things.

Basically, I am hoping someone who actually knows and can show me the ACTUAL law, not just what their safety training told them. I've had enough training to last me awhile, and I don't trust this narrative about "obligations".

Statements by Dr Hinshaw:
Good Samaritan Southgate
  • 3/5 deaths are from Good Samaritan Southgate
  • Most deadly outbreak in province
  • Many recent cases and deaths were exposed weeks ago
  • AHS is working with operator, deployed staff, and is meeting daily with leadership
  • Doesn't know what rate of asymptomatic testing is being conducted at the site
  • Changes have been made on evolving evidence
  • Often asked "why close schools in spring, but open with higher cases now"
  • Notes that there is a much larger knowledge base now
  • Previous decisions were based on similar viruses, where schools act as an amplifier, and avoid surges others have faced
  • Evidence shows schools do not appear a driver of spread
  • School closures have have emotional, physical, and mental impact on kids
  • Opening schools seeks to balance all these potential impacts
  • In Q&A, notes that some families will not see "back to school" as the right option, and there needs to be options to support those families. Current plan is a good balance which offers this flexibility.
  • Asked about cases in summer school programs: Shows there is space for improving response to symptomatic individuals (they need to be in isolation until test comes back). Also shows that turnaround time for tests may need to be shortened
Sentiments on recent numbers
  • Today's data shows that we can limit Covid-19's spread
  • Albertans are answering challenge as active cases begin to decline
  • 9 regions have left "watch list"
  • We are ending summer. Changes now will dictate case load in August-September
  • Hopes to see the number drop further. "No easy path forward" other than following recommendations
  • Has not seen seasonal trends with Covid (points to Texas/Florida as cases where heat hasn't ended cases)
  • Difficult to say if there's a specific driver to current decreasing numbers
Other notes
  • Has heard positive stories of mask use
  • Asked about social media criticism for reopening schools: has many people close to her who will be working/attending schools. Has provided best recommendation to school reentry. Recommendations she has made (e.g. - masking for Grade 4-12) have been accepted and supported. Understands the anxiety.
  • Do not have finalized data about suicides, but haven't seen an indication of spike in suicides during Covid-19 closures to date
  • Asked about Calgary Remand Centre (had its 3rd positive test yesterday): detected as routine intake process, where contact with general population wasn't possible yet.
  • Asked about Edmonton Remand Centre (refers to potential breach of protocol): have worked with correctional facilities to provide support. Cannot comment directly about the issues specifically noted. Stresses that safety is critical and will take information forward as questions to the individual groups.

2020.07.26 04:56 ntidwell98 Thorough DD $TNXP (Tonix Pharmaceuticals)

What is Tonix?

Therapeutic Areas

  1. Phase 3 RELIEF preliminary data for TNX-102 SL* for Fibromyalgia expected Q3 2020.
  2. Preclinical development for TNX-1800 with Southern Research, Columbia University, Kansas State University, and/or University of Alberta.
  3. New Drug Application for TNX-102 SL* for Fibromyalgia
  4. Top-line results for TNX-102*SL For Fibromyalgia expected by Q2 2021.

With TNX-102 SL* for Fibromyalgia Phase 3 interim analysis expected Q3 2020 and updates coming from one of the 4 collaborations they have for COVID 19 vaccine research, I expect a few catalysts by end of Q3 2020 leading up to Q4. This is a short/medium term play (1-3 month) at best.
Holding long term poses high risk as stated in the 10-Q multiple times they are low on funding and very reliant on TNX-102*SL for Fibromyalgia getting FDA approval to bring new revenue into the company.
The added bonus of the COVID 19 catalyst could cause for an unexpected, overnight pop if any Press Release with positive preclinical data results comes out. The collaboration with 4 top institutions (Columbia University, University of Alberta, Kansas State University, and Southern Research) for their latest research and development for COVID 19 shows a level of legitimacy within their work to me. COVID stocks have been very hot recently with new government programs being put together to accelerate the COVID vaccination process. Positive COVID results with any or all collaborations could increase the share price.
With a current share price of $1.45, I could see a relative price target of $3.50 up to $6.00 depending on what news is released and what the data says. This is a high risk/high reward play. I DO NOT OWN A POSITION, but would consider jumping in if SP reached $1.20 or below (considering the drop was not from negative news) for 200 shares.
As always manage your risk according to your situation! The information above was found using the company website,, and business wire. I invite comments, concerns, and additional information I missed. Best of luck to everyone with their trades and enjoy your Sunday.

End Notes

  1. Since 2010 self-employed workers can voluntarily participate in EI Special Benefit for Self-Employed Workers (SBSE) to gain access to many life event-type benefits accessible to regular employees, such as maternity and paternity leave programs, leave due to sickness or to care for an sick family member. In addition to this, current EI system allows certain exceptions for some non-standard workers. For example some individuals who work independently as barbers, hairdressers, taxi drivers, drivers of other passenger vehicles are eligible to receive benefits through the regular EI program. Fishermen are also included as insured persons under the EI Fishing Regulations. In the case of the self- employed fishermen, EI qualification is tied to income. In order to qualify for up to 26 weeks of benefit, they need to have earned between $2,500 to $4,200 in the last 31 weeks.
  2. The two main reasons for not contributing to the EI program were not having worked in the previous 12 months, and non-insurable employment (which includes self-employment).

2020.06.30 05:37 OneFaraday The Drowned Village (M)

I’ll get some of these boring details out of the way first, because they might be relevant. Who knows?
I found the thumb drive in a McDonald’s restroom in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, on January 3rd. The service was mediocre but the food was hot and the restrooms were clean. I still felt hungover from New Year’s in Edmonton, and although the roads were alright the other drivers were typical idiots and I needed to stay alert.
I was sitting there in that tiny stall, browsing Reddit, not expecting I was about the find the video that would consume my life over the next month. I pulled on the tail of flimsy toilet paper that was dangling from the dispenser, and along with the see-through thin sheet of paper a small object fell out and clattered on the tile floor. I bent over to get a better look; it was a small blue thumb drive.
I don’t know why I bothered to pick it up and pocket it. I don’t usually put random small objects in my pockets, especially from bathrooms in roadside burger joints. But I did. I finished my business and got out of there, and almost forgot I had the little drive until I made it home safely that evening in Winnipeg.
My roommate was still with his family in Newfoundland, so I had our little apartment to myself. I didn’t start work until the fifth, so I settled in to lounge around and play pointless video games until the early hours.
When I took my pants off, the thumb drive fell out.
I held it curiously between my thumb and forefinger. There weren’t any markings on it besides the brand. There was something about it that made me uneasy; maybe it just seemed so intentional, the way it must have been tucked into that toilet paper dispenser. Like someone was hoping that it would be found. I mulled it over for a few minutes; could it be dangerous? Did it have a virus or some sort of malware that would infect my computer and send all of my personal info to it’s creator?
In the end, curiosity won over prudence. I plugged it into my gaming PC, and had a look. There was only one file on the drive, a large video file just labelled 45041.mp4. The thumbnail was just a dark blue. So of course, being the naive fool I was, I double-clicked on it.
I won’t tell you yet what I saw, but I sat there riveted. At first it seemed like it was just someone’s home movie, but weird things started happening that caught my attention and kept me glued to my seat until the very end. When I got to the end and the file stopped playing, I found myself sitting there in my dark bedroom, in my gross black second-hand office chair, white knuckles gripping the armrests, eyes so wide and unmoving they ached and stung from dryness, mouth gaping like a dead fish.
Since then, I’ve been desperately trying to piece it all together.
First, a few details about the file: it’s about an hour and forty-five minutes long. Strangely, there is no sound. When the file started I fiddled with my volume controls for a bit before realizing that there just wasn’t anything to hear. I right-clicked on the file and opened the properties tab, where I discovered the video properties showed it to be 1280x720, data rate of 6028Kbps, total bitrate of 6161kbps, 29 frames per second. I don’t know much about file formats, maybe that’ll be helpful to someone. Anyways, the point is: the audio information just says NONE.
Whoever edited it did so haphazardly. Scenes cut with no transitions, so it’s really jarring. Sometimes cuts happen mid-sentence when someone is talking. There a few boring long stretches that really should have been taken out. Maybe it made more sense with audio.
I watched the video nearly every day since, pausing frequently to analyze details and piece together what happened. Fortunately, I have an acquaintance who is hard of hearing. He’s Marc, the only other person I’ve shown the video too. At first he was pretty wary, thinking I was asking him to use his skill like he was performing a party trick, but once he saw the video he had the same reaction and understood.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t exactly able to provide a transcript. Sometimes the people in the video aren’t facing the camera. Marc isn’t entirely deaf either, he usually needs some sound in order to piece together speech. And it’s not easy to figure out what’s going on in the video, so context clues aren’t all there. However, he was able to put together enough to provide some of the dialogue that will be in my description of the video. It helps a bit, but we still don’t entirely understand the content of the video.
It was on January 20th that I finally made the big discovery, that made me realize I had somehow fallen off the deep end and had to share this all with somebody and put out my plea for help.
Okay, I’ve gone on long enough. Time to describe what’s in the video itself.
The first scene is inside a car. From later exterior shots, we discover that it’s a blue Nissan Altima, probably 2009. The camera is pointed out the window at some rocky hills. There are lots of trees: oak, aspen, maple, and so forth. There are a few leaves just starting to turn orange and red. A sign whizzes past; I later managed to pause and read the text “Hardwood Road 400m.” This is the first of many clues that helped me figure out their route. They’re in Ontario, heading west.
The camera turns to the driver. She’s stunning; not in the sense of a blonde instagram model, but very regal and beautiful. She had dark black hair with a few strands of white. She has a sharp jaw, grey eyes, and a few lines around her eyes. Late thirties, probably. She’s the reason I kept watching the video, the first time. Marc suspects that she’s French Canadian, which is one of the reasons he had difficulty with the transcript. The camera is pointed at her a lot. We’re pretty sure her name is Renée.
Renée notices she’s on camera. She smiles at the passenger.
“There’s a Tim Horton’s ahead. Want to stop and stretch?”
The passenger probably says something like “Yes, and let’s grab a coffee.”
“Great idea,” says Renée. “The road already feels monotonous.”
There’s a bit of silence. The passenger aims the camera ahead down the road for a bit, then back at Renée.
“Are you going to film us the entire trip?” Renée asks with a smile.
We don’t hear the response, but Renée laughs, then the scene abruptly cuts.
The next scene is on a very long bridge over a mix of wetlands, islands, and river. The camera is mostly pointed at the scenery, but a couple of times it looks over at Renée.
At one point, Renée looks thoughtful and says something like “Yes, of course she will.” We don’t know what the question was.
We see two flags pass by: one Canadian, one American. I later discovered that this is the border; they are on the Sault Ste Marie bridge, crossing into the states.
I’m still not sure where in the states they stopped next, but it looks like they took advantage of the opportunity for some cross-border crossing. There’s a shot in the parking lot outside a Walmart, where they are loading their bags into the back of the car. We see the passenger’s legs and feet in one shot, our first good glimpse of her. What we can see of her outfit is a little more feminine and fashionable than Renée’s simple, comfortable clothes. She’s wearing white open-toed shoes, and her toenails are painted. She’s wearing a flowing black skirt, and from the glimpse of her left hand holding some shopping bags, it looks like she’s got a white knit sweater.
They root through the bags and show some of their items to the camera; presumably the audio had an explanation of what they’ve bought and why, but at this point in the video it’s kind of confusing. There’s a waterproof box for the video camera. A bunch of pulleys and ropes. Road snacks and drinks. Nose clips, the kind used for diving. A big pair of bolt cutters. Thigh-length wading boots, like fly-fishers use. It’s obvious now that they’re on some sort of mission, but it’s hard to guess what. It looks like they’re going wading, rock climbing, and diving all at once. When I first saw all of this, I wondered if they were going after hidden treasure or something.
The camera pans up to Renée’s face, catching her mid sentence. Just a note- where you see parenthesis, those are off-camera gaps in the dialogue that we’ve guessed at.
“(That should) be enough. If not, ---- is only an hour’s drive from the site.” We think she said the name of a town there, but Marc just screwed up his face and shrugged. He said she spoke it very quickly, and it’s a complex word. He thinks it has an “s” in the middle and maybe an “r” on the end, and it’s probably three syllables. If we could figure it out, we might understand more about what happened.
The next shot is in the car, driving through North Dakota. It’s presumably the next morning. The camera is pointed at Renée, and we only know her side of the conversation, so it’s hard to guess at what’s going on. She sips her coffee and looks thoughtful, like she’s listening.
“Yeah, we’re not far off schedule. We should make it to Moose Jaw tonight.”
Between her accent and the strange name of the town, it took us a while to figure out “Moose Jaw.” It wasn’t until I plotted out their route on Google Maps that I realized this must be where they stopped. That was an important realization. In a very roundabout way, it led to me figuring out exactly when this trip took place. This conversation in the car took place on August 24th, 2019.
The passenger asks something like “(Do you need a break? Want me to drive?)”
“Sure, in a while,” Renée replies. “We’ll stop and stretch at the border, and we can switch drivers.”
There’s a gap where neither of them are talking. The passenger turns the camera to the road to take in some scenery, then pans back.
We’re not sure what the passenger just asked, but Renée looks suddenly serious.
“Beth,” she says, finally giving us the passenger’s name. “We can’t focus on that yet. All we can do is offer her the-”
We’re not sure of the rest of the conversation. Beth’s hands get shaky. She looks away from Renée a lot. We know that they continue this important conversation, and Renée starts to look upset but is clearly trying to keep Beth calm. Marc caught a few random words but isn’t certain: drive, river, help, and “do our best.” The scene cuts suddenly with the tension unresolved.
The next shot is a brief one. Renée is smiling now, snacking on some cheetos. They are entering a small town; a sign welcomes them to Portal.
In the next shot, they have switched seats. We finally see Beth. She is a little younger than Renée, wearing more makeup, and has big round sunglasses on. She is happy now. She puts out her hand, and Renée follows it with the camera down to her own knee. She takes Beth’s hand in her own and squeezes it. It’s a very sweet, sort of Thelma-and-Louise moment. They’re obviously good friends.
Renée watches the road for a bit. We are back in Canada. The trees are getting more sparse, and we can see more and more of the flat boring prairies Saskatchewan is famous for. Road signs are kilometres. Gas prices are in cents per litre.
At this point, I think Renée asks Beth what she wants for dinner.
“Chinese,” Beth says with a smile, and laughs.
I don’t know what the in-joke is, but I’m pretty sure of the word because suddenly the scene cuts to the inside of a restaurant. It’s a chinese buffet.
The first time I watched the video, I felt a surge of recognition, and I realized that I’d been to this restaurant before. I didn’t figure out where and when until later, when I realized they were in Moose Jaw. Then I realized that this was a restaurant I sometimes stopped at on my road trips back and forth from my hometown to my new home in Winnipeg.
Beth has the camera again. She is watching Renée eat. Renée blushes and tries to demur from the camera.
As their eating slowed and their chopsticks settled on their plates, their conversation turned serious again.
“At least a hundred and fifty feet,” Renée answers to some unseen questions.
“(Do we have enough rope?)”
“Yes, we got two hundred and fifty each. It’s lots.”
I’m not sure what the next question was.
“Then we just use the winch and pull ourselves free.”
The next part of the conversation is unknown, because Renée starts fiddling with her chopsticks, mumbling, and grazing on more of her meal. Marc rolled his eyes in frustration at this point, and said something about how “hearing people” do this shit all the time and it drives him nuts.
Presumably they continue discussing technical aspects of their adventure. Renée looks very sober and anxious about it, but she’s still clearly keeping it together for Beth’s sake.
Beth gently sets down the camera, but for some reason leaves it running and pointed at the interior of the restaurant while she leaves for the bathroom. The other patrons of the restaurant continue eating and don’t notice.
Another jarring cut to the inside of a hotel room. Beth is ready for bed, in a t-shirt and underwear. She’s sitting cross-legged on the king-size bed, holding an iPad in her lap. Her face is glued to the screen, which is shining blue light up at her. She looks like she’s been crying.
It’s unclear why Renée is recording this, it feels like a violation of privacy, but Beth doesn’t seem to mind. She looks up.
“She’s still following us, isn’t she?”
We’re not sure of Renée’s answer, but it doesn’t seem to comfort Beth much. She just nods.
There’s presumably some sort of noise, and suddenly they both look to the window. The window must be open a crack, because the sheer curtains are moving gently in the breeze. There doesn’t seem to be anything there.
Renée spontaneously rushes to the window, still holding the camera. As she approaches it, the scene cuts again.
I watched that footage a hundred times, I think, searching for whatever startled them. Sometimes I convince myself I can see a face beyond, but it’s clear from the view of the building across the parking lot that they must be on at least the seventh floor.
It’s the next morning, and they’re leaving Moose Jaw. Renée is driving again, clutching a cup of coffee in her right hand and never setting it down. She doesn’t look like she slept much.
The camera stays focused on her for a solid five minutes as she drives and sips. Then, in response to an unseen question, she suddenly speaks.
“Yes. She probably will.”
After another minute and twenty seconds, another cut. Suddenly the camera seems to be inside of a bag or something; it’s almost completely dark, but the bag must be open enough to show some blurry dark shapes moving around like someone is walking. I later speculated that they were trying to catch a conversation with someone on record, and hidden the camera in a bag. Now though, it’s just four minutes of vague blurry shapes.
Then Renée is holding the camera. It’s pointed at Beth. Beth looks like she’s been crying, but is putting on a brave face now. They take a left turn at a tiny town called Dunmore, then another there’s another sudden cut.
They eventually stop for the night. They aren’t a hotel tonight, but in someone’s home. From context, I’m guessing that these are Beth’s parents, or some other close relatives.
Renée is holding the camera now, pointing it at Beth’s mother who his cooking on the stove. She’s wearing an old-fashioned pink apron with lace edges, and has a matching oven mitt on. She looks like an older, shorter Beth, with her blonde hair cut into a bob that doesn’t really suit her. She smiles nervously when she sees that she’s being filmed, and makes some comment about “that camera” before hiding in embarrassment behind the oven mit.
Beth steps into frame and laughs, patting her mother on the back and presumably offering to help her cook, because then we see Mom handing her a cheese grater and a block of cheddar.
Renée pans over across the kitchen to where Beth’s father is stepping into the room. He looks stern, almost angry, and is clutching a tumbler of amber fluid like he wants to smash it across Renée’s face.
The father says something, but he’s saying it through gritted teeth. Marc thinks part of it is “would lead her through this,” but that’s a guess. Beth’s mother steps quickly back into frame, gently taking Dad’s glass and saying something to him to try and calm him down. He looks like he’s about to say something, but there’s another sudden cut.
The next shot is very brief, and confusing. It’s a bathroom sink- presumably at Beth’s parents’ place. From the lighting it looks like the middle of the night, and the only light on is the bathroom light overhead. The sink is full of strange, wet, tangled gray hair. The angle of the shot doesn’t let us see the mirror, so we don’t know who’s holding the camera. They just linger on the hair for about five seconds, then another cut.
The next shot is in the entryway of Beth’s parents’ house. Beth’s mother says something like “Sorry for the (incident) last night.” She almost elbows Dad in the ribs, and he mutters what must be an apology. The camera pans around the room, momentarily showing Beth and Renée in the hall mirror, before the shot ends.
I kept coming back to this shot for some reason. I thought it was noteworthy that this is probably the only shot where we can see both Renée’s and Beth’s faces at the same time. But something in the back of my head kept itching over this, and eventually I realized the obvious: from the angle of the shot, the camera should be visible. But neither of them are holding it, and there’s no one else there.
Next is another highway driving shot. It’s short, and just seems to establish that they are leaving Fort MacLeod, a town in Alberta.
The next shot is from inside the car. It’s unclear what the camera is supposed to be recording, because it’s on its side and laying on the dash, pointed haphazardly out the passenger window. It’s like they set it down, left the car, and the camera turned on by itself.
Outside the car is a parking lot, surrounded by coniferous trees. Everything looks like it’s covered in mist and fog. I speculate that they’ve made it to the Rocky Mountains now. They are probably at a rest stop.
There is a strange figure across the parking lot. It looks like a gray-haired woman, but I was never able to zoom in on this shot well enough to see. She seems to be just staring at the car, directly at the camera lens.
Renée and Beth walk in from out of frame and get into the car. They don’t seem to have noticed the woman. As the car starts up, one of them must have noticed that the camera is on, because it shakes like its being picked up. Then the shot ends.
After that, it’s really difficult to figure out their route. The next shot is inside a busy cafe where they order hot drinks and cheesecake, but there’s no clues to figure out where it is. Renée is holding the camera. There isn’t much conversation, and large parts of it are obscured by Beth’s hands or her cup. She looks uneasy and distracted. She keeps looking out the window.
The next shot is back in the car. At one point I saw a highway sign, but other than knowing that they are now in British Columbia, I can’t figure out their location.
Beth is driving again, Renée is holding the camera.
“You think filming everything will really help?” asks Beth.
“(Filming was your idea.)”
“Yeah. Yeah it was, wasn’t it? I just thought that we should, because…” This part is unintelligible.
Renée asks something, we’re not sure what.
“Maybe it’ll help. Maybe it’ll be easier for the next person.”
There’s a long pause in the conversation.
“I wish we had never found that USB drive,” Beth sighs.
Obviously, when Marc told me this part, I just about lost my mind. I’d already developed some strange kind of connection with Beth and Renée, something that I couldn’t put my finger on. But now there was some kind of parallel between us that was emerging.
There’s only one more shot. It’s impossible to know where, but I’m fairly certain that they are now far past the Rockies. The mountains in the background look different, older or more worn somehow. I think they are somewhere in the B.C. interior.
They have parked in what appears to be the parking lot of a defunct facility of some kind. Everything is in disrepair. The pavement is riddled with potholes, some of which are already growing saplings. They seem to be in some kind of valley, but it’s so heavily forested that it’s hard to see much of the scenery.
The camera glances over at the entrance to the parking lot. The road also looks disused. There was a heavy gate blocking the parking lot, but now it was swinging in the wind. I understood why they brought the bolt cutters.
Beth is holding the camera. Renée has a very strong, stoic look on her face. She turns to the camera.
“It’s going to be okay. Remember, she can’t hurt you. Okay? We can do this.”
Beth makes some sort of response, and Renée nods.
They load up their gear in a duffel bag and begin hiking down an old trail through the woods. It’s treacherous; it looks like nobody has been down here in a while. A couple of times Renée takes out a saw and clears some branches to make the way more passable.
After a few minutes, a clearing becomes visible ahead. Then they descend below the tree line, and it becomes obvious that this isn’t just a clearing.
The camera pans over the area, and I think that if I could hear them they would both be gasping in awe. I know I do every time I get to this point. They’re near the water line now, of what must have been an enormous reservoir. There is mud… literally everywhere. The water must have drained away recently, because it’s all fresh and wet and brownish-gray. It coats nearly everything below the old water level, except a few rocky outcroppings. Off to the left there is a bank that must have been a picnic spot on the shore of the reservoir, because I can see an area of green grass surrounding a picnic table and a tall lone aspen tree. Around this area is just mud. Renée and Beth carefully hike over to the table.
From here, something new comes into sight. There are a bunch of buildings below that mud line, enough to be a hamlet or a small town. They’re vague ruined blocks now, probably made of brick, coated in mud, like a child had been building houses out of clay and left them half-finished.
Beth pans over to Renée, who is kneeling next to the aspen tree, winding a rope around it. She is saying something, but it’s not very clear because her mouth is obscured by the camera angle and some of the terminology is hard for Marc for decipher. He caught “we’re going down,” “the ropes are tight,” and “pull it tight.” I thought about finding a friend with climbing experience to explain the setup with the ropes and pulleys to me, but I decided that the fewer people who knew about the video the better.
As Renée is finishing setting up the ropes, Beth says something, I have no idea what. Renée nods. She reaches into her pocket and pulls out an envelope. Inside is a piece of lined paper, written on with felt marker. She smooths it out and sets it down on the picnic table. Beth brings the camera over it, and lingers there for a few seconds. Of course, I have paused the playback to read the message several times. Why they wrote it down instead of saying it, I don’t know. The whole video they’re acting like I can hear them, but for this brief moment they seem to know that I will have to read this.
We’re very sorry. We have no control over what happens after this. We tried our best to follow the instructions perfectly, but if we have failed someone else will have to try next. Before you make the attempt, do as we did. Record your journey. Pass on this message:
Only one thing will satisfy her. Only one thing will complete the drowned village. Bring it to her, but if you fail, you must pass on the message.
The camera panned back up, and settled on Beth’s face. She had turned the camera around to speak directly into it, but her hands are unsteady so her words aren’t totally clear.
“She’s been following us for (several weeks). Ever since we found the USB drive. We see her everywhere. (We haven’t been able to) sleep. I hope this is the end of it- if not, you will have to try next. I’m so sorry. It happened to us too. Wish us luck, (but if we fail) good luck to you.”
Beth set the camera down on the table, and I watched them put on their hip waders, strapping them over their shoulders. Then they strapped themselves into climbing harnesses, and clipped themselves on to the rope. Beth pulled the nose clips out of her pocket and put one on, handing the other to Renée. I was confused by this for a while, then I realized that if this was a body of water that had recently been emptied, it probably stank. The mud was probably full of bacteria, algae, some freshwater plants, even a few fish and other animals. It was all in the early stages of decomposition.
Beth picked up the camera and followed Renée down past the water line. They tried to stick to the rocky areas, but sometimes they had to wade carefully through the mud. Some parts looked to be deeper than others, so they had to avoid getting stuck in the more treacherous areas. The purpose of the ropes became obvious: if they got mired in the mud, their only hope might be pulling themselves out.
At one point Beth leaned over to examine something. It was like a stringy texture in the uniform grey of everything, stuck into the mud. She reached down and pulled it up, and I realized it was some kind of hair algae or stringy moss. It looked exactly like the “hair” in the sink at her parent’s house. Now that I was aware of it, I realized it was all over the place.
They made it to the largest, and highest-up building. Up close, it was obviously by its architecture that it had been a small old schoolhouse. Renée walked right up to it, and Beth must have said something in alarm, but Renée just looked over her shoulder and smiled. She said something like “it should be safe.” Part of her speech is cut off as she turns back to the building, then Marc could make out more when she turns back.
“They explored it in the last video. I want to see it for myself.”
So in they went. Inside were rows of very old desks. If there had been chalkboards or decorations in the school, they were long eroded or caked in mud. The mud was calf deep, making the seats of the desks look strangely low to the ground.
There wasn’t really much else to see. They retraced their steps and checked their ropes, then descended to the town. Everywhere it was more of the same. If this town had been sacrificed to build a dam, it would have been cleared of artifacts before it was flooded. If not, if it had fallen prey to some kind of flood or disaster, then the everyday items of the resident’s lives were washed away or buried in the mud. All that was left was the structures themselves, and they were crumbling away too.
The camera looked around nervously, then settled on Renée. Renée shrugged. She reached into her pocket and pulled something out. It was an old antique bell, the kind that a farm wife might ring to call everyone in for supper.
“Yeah, I think so,” Renée replied to Beth’s unseen question. “The guy said it was from this town, but who knows. As far as we can tell, she was the schoolteacher.”
Renée carefully and ceremoniously set the handbell down on an exposed rock jutting out of the mud. She looked at Beth, then back and forth down the muddy valley.
Suddenly she screamed, and pointed uphill. The camera swung quickly around and settled on a figure standing in the mud about fifty paces away. It was that same grey-haired woman, but now I realized that she wasn’t grey from age. She was grey from head to toe, covered in that same mud.
She pointed directly at the camera, and just stood there. The camera starts shaking, and it seems like Beth and Renée are trying to quickly get out of there. At this point they must hear what’s coming.
At the last moment, the camera turns back towards the woman, but this time she’s not there. She’s obscured behind an enormous thirty-foot tall wall of white water, rushing down the valley, coming towards the camera at high speed.
There was no time to escape. The camera gets caught up in the wake. It doesn’t go too far down the valley, because it’s snapped securely into its waterproof case, which is strapped to Beth’s wrist, who is tied to the aspen tree. So it spins around and around for a few minutes, and as the initial rush of water goes past it settles to the bottom of the reservoir and lies still, pointed back up the hill where the woman is still standing, unmoved by the water. She is still staring directly into the lens.
This is the final shot, and it lasts for another four minutes. Everything is underwater, dark and still. The woman stands there unflinching the entire time. Near the end, Renée’s body floats slowly into view, still tethered to the faraway tree.
That’s the video. And now you probably know why I described it, instead of just uploading for you to watch. It was meant for me all along.
I knew this for sure on January 20, when I went back and watched the scene in the Chinese restaurant. You see, the reason I was able to figure out the exact date of the video is because I’m sitting there, in the background, eating my fried rice with a spoon. You can see me clearly once you zoom in. I’m wearing my red hoodie and black jeans.
After I watched the video, she started showing up everywhere. She comes to my window at night, watching me sleep. I see her in playgrounds, back alleys, out of the corner of my eye. I went to the movies and she was in the front row, but was gone when the movie let out. She won’t leave me alone, and I know what I have to do now.
Marc’s coming with me, she found him too. He agrees with me, we need to follow Renée and Beth’s path and try to satisfy the woman in the reservoir. I’ve barely slept in weeks; she is ruining my life.
On the way there, we’re going to have to figure out our offering to her. I have no idea what will satisfy her, but I have to try. I’m on my way to the pawn shop to buy a video camera, just in case. (Wish us luck.)
The only question left- and the thing I need your help with- where is she? I don’t know where to find the village.
